About the Department

The Department of Arabic Language and Literature was established concurrently with the founding of King Saud University in 1377 AH (1957 CE). Among its primary objectives was the preservation of the Arabic language—the language of the Holy Qur’an—and its rich linguistic heritage. Over time, the department has evolved, much like other departments within the college, expanding its areas of specialization to include syntax, morphology, rhetoric, criticism, and literature.

The department also assumed responsibility for teaching other languages such as Turkish, Persian, and Hebrew, which were later separated and became part of the College of Languages and Translation following its establishment.

Today, the Department of Arabic Language and Literature stands as one of the largest departments in the college in terms of the number of faculty members, lecturers, and teaching assistants. The department offers both general and specialized Arabic language courses to students across various disciplines throughout the university.
