About the Department

Media studies are considered one of the important fields of scientific studies in modern and contemporary society. This importance of academic media has increased in the time of the communications revolution and modern media technologies, in addition to the intense momentum witnessed in the international, regional and local arena of increasing interest in the media and the various roles it plays in society. All of this places a huge responsibility on the Mass Communication Department to face all these different challenges, and to carry out its huge tasks and responsibilities in graduating distinguished media cadres, to carry out its mission in the fields of media such as visual, audio, print, and electronic media, public relations, and advertising.                                                                                  
 

The Department of Mass Communication at King Saud University works to achieve its vision and mission, in accordance with its scientific role at the university, its position in society, and in a way that supports its relations with local, Arab and international academic institutions. During this new phase of the department, a number of development programs were introduced that aim to raise the level of the department’s outputs, including students, professors, research, and studies.                                                                                   
   
The Department of Mass Communication at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (formerly Arts) at King Saud University was established in 1392 AH, corresponding to 1972 AD, as part of the college’s group of departments. Opening this department at King Saud University had many goals from its founding until today, including:

  1. The university administration’s belief in the importance of teaching and studying media.

  2. The necessity of graduating academic media cadres capable of assuming their tasks and responsibilities in development and development processes.

  3. The direct relationship between the media as an academic institution and social, political, economic, scientific, cultural and educational life.

  4. The important role of the Mass Communication Department in studying scientific media problems and developing solutions for them.

  5. The great development witnessed in the international arena is a huge development in the media.

  6. Keeping up with developments, absorbing them, and then transmitting them to students and training them on them.

  7. The importance and necessity of the participation of the Mass Communication Department as it is the first academic department to study and teach media in the Arabian Gulf region.

  8. The department’s participation in various development plans in society and as a beacon of enlightenment, a linking tool between various community institutions and a means of conveying the changes that occur in society.

  9. Creating a media generation that understands the media message on scientific foundations to raise the level of professional performance.

  10. Preparing competencies in the fields of audio, visual and print media, so that they are scientifically qualified and practically trained.


                                                                                                       



Historical Timeline

  • 1392 AH (1972 AD):  The department was established as the first academic department for studying and teaching media in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf region “to specialize in journalismradio and television.” 

  • 1393 AH (1973 AD):  A division “specializing in public relations” was opened. 

  • 1407 AH (1987 AD):  A division “specializing in theatrical arts” was opened. 

  • 1419 - 1420 AH:  Admission for master’s students began at the beginning of the first semester of the academic year.

  • 1421 - 1422 AH: The Performing Arts Division was reserved.

  • 1429 - 1430 AH:  Admission for female master’s students began at the beginning of the second semester of the academic year. 

  •  1433 - 1434 AH: Admission for female students to the bachelor’s program began at the beginning of the first semester of the academic year.  

  • 1439 - 1440 AH:  Admission for doctoral male and female students began at the beginning of the second semester of the academic year.
